Rain Cast in Hollywood Film

Korean singer-actor Rain will take part in "Speed Racer," a new film by Andy and Larry Wachowski of "The Matrix" fame. Rain will play a talented rookie car racer who struggles to save his family business. He will join the filming in Berlin for two months after he finishes his world tour in June.

Rain's agent said that Rain personally visited Berlin in April to meet with the Wachowski brothers. At the meeting, the directors of the Matrix series showed Rain some materials for the film and Rain was reportedly very impressed with its ingenuity and techniques.

"Speed Racer" is based on a popular Japanese animation titled "Mach Go Go." The animation has been aired in the U.S. as well.

The May 31st press briefing of the film is expected to be attended by more than 100 media outlets worldwide, as well as Joel Silver, the producer of the Matrix series, and a number of big Hollywood celebrities.

Rain said that he considers himself a novice actor since this is his debut film in Hollywood, and that he will take one step at a time.

What if Rain Parts Ways With JYP

Perhaps Korea’s most internationally recognized entertainer, the singer and actor Rain came to the end of his exclusive contract with management firm JYP on Thursday. Rain will decide where to go after his world tour ends in June. There are rumors he will move to another firm or set up an independent company, but it cannot be ruled out that he will stay with JYP. "Nothing has been confirmed. No matter what decision Rain makes, Rain and JYP chief Park Jin-young will remain close friends,” an insider with the agency said.

Park Jin-young's strategy has played a critical role in making Rain a global star since his debut in April 2002. The ChosunIlbo asked experts what the gains and losses will be if Rain leaves JYP.

◆ Gains

Rain stands to make a lot more money if he says goodbye to JYP. The listed management firms that are jostling to attract Rain have more capital power than JYP. Ahn Suk-jun, a vice president with Warner Music Korea, said, "Except listed enterprises which can invest large amounts, other management firm won’t be able to break even given the big money it would take to lure Rain." If he leaves JYP, Rain will have decisive power in business and music, and he would emerge fully from under Park's wing.

Pop music critic Kim Jak-ga said, "Rain hasn’t had many big hits domestically, compared with his success overseas.” Leaving NYP, he could “team up with different songwriters and make more popular songs." Woo Hyun-jung, a representative director of MusicWell, said leaving would be “a bid for musical independence. Regardless of success, that attempt is worth making."

◆ Losses

One source in the music industry said Rain still has ambitions to be a world star. “Without Park's JYP, there is no company that could meet Rain's desire to be a worldwide star. If Rain quits working with JYP, he might lose all the contacts and know-how in the U.S. music and movie industry that Park has developed."

Some say Rain can make up for that if he picks a major Japanese management firm with close ties with the U.S. entertainment industry. Kim Jak-ga said, "There is a high chance that Rain will see success as an actor in the U.S. It will help if he works with a Japanese firm that has strong bonds with Hollywood." Rain has been offered a part in the new movie by the Wachowski bothers of “Matrix” fame.

Music critic Lim Jin-mo said if he changers his management agency, Rain faces some confusion. “But in any case, I hope he’ll do his best to keep the Korean Wave alive," he added.

Personally I would like to see Rain continuing his alliance with JYP especially for his more in the US. Park Jin Young already invested a lot to make him known and I would like to see those start bear fruit. Plus the fact that it's hard to enter the US market without a trusted person to guide you.

As for his career in Korea, I hope he will make a wise decision. I'm not keen on him signing with Star M because they did not handle his World Tour and his album promo well. I'd rather see him be independent or tie-up with a company with a good reputation in the music industry.

Blessing comes for those who strive hard and for Rain all the hard work are finally being recognized. I already posted the news of his inclusion in the Time 100 list just like what happened last year. Here comes another news that he's a part of People Magazine's 50 most beautiful people for 2007.

And to add another crown to his continous success, we won the Best New Actor in a movie last night at the Baek Sang. Though I haven't seen the movie I heard from friends that he was really good in it. Congratulations Bi, I hope you have more recognition coming your way.

Other than being nominated in TIME100 Most Influential People, Rain also appears in the list of "The Most Beautiful 50 People" by People magazine.

The event is organised by People magazine every year, Brad Pitt, George Clooney etc were some of the winners last year. For Rain who is going to enter USA market after his world tour in June, obviously this is quite encouraging to him!

Rain Atop Time 100 Online Vote

Singer Rain could well be named as one of the world's top 100 influential people by Time magazine for the second year.

The singer current sits atop the ongoing online survey to determine this year's Time 100 list.

Rain made it on the list for the first time last year and attended the award ceremony and the Time 100 party at New York Lincoln Center last May, which earned him global fame.

In the online poll underway on the Time Web site, Rain has garnered 22,310 votes as of Monday morning, Korean time, followed by rock band U2 frontman Bono and U.S. President George W. Bush. There are a total of 200 candidates.

The Web site introduces the Korean singer as having topped music charts in Japan, China, Taiwan and Indonesia, performed at Manhattan's Madison Square Garden and recorded a duet with B2K's Omarion.

Rain to Perform at Madison Square Garden Again

Top Korean singer Rain will hold another concert at Madison Square Garden in New York, the venue of his debut performance in America. The New York concert is part of his June world tour, which includes stops in Atlanta, San Francisco, and Los Angeles.

Prior to his American tour, Rain will hold a concert at the Tokyo Dome in Japan on May 25th for over 35,000 Japanese fans. The Tokyo Dome is also the home field for Korean slugger Lee Seung-yeop, who currently plays for Japan's top professional baseball team, the Yomiuri Giants. It has also served as the venue for concerts by the global pop stars Beyonce and Madonna.

Rain's world tour organizer confirmed his North American tour schedule in June. Rain will first perform at the Molson Amphitheater in Toronto, Canada on June 9. Then his next concert will be staged at the Philips Arena in Atlanta on June 15, New York's Madison Square Garden on June 23, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco on June 27,and the Staples Center in Los Angeles on June 30.

At the end of this month, Rain will hold a concert in China, followed by one at Japan's Tokyo Dome. Before Rain leaves for North America, he will wrap up the Asian tour with shows in Thailand from June 2 to 3.

Rain to Perform at Prestigious Tokyo Dome

In yet another confirmation of his stature as an international star, Rain is scheduled to be the first Korean singer to hold a concert at Japan's Tokyo Dome stadium. The pop sensation traveled to Japan on Wednesday, two days after returning from last week’s successful performance in Australia, and announced his plans to perform at the Tokyo Dome at an official press conference.

Star M Entertainment, which is promoting Rain's world tour, recently agreed to bring the "Rain's Coming" tour to the Tokyo Dome on May 25. The Dome has hosted the world's top talents, such as Mariah Carey, the Rolling Stones, and Beyonce. The Dome, which is also the home of the Yomiuri Giants and Korean slugger Lee Seung-yeop, is the ultimate dream of many Japanese performers, but only top-drawer local acts have ascended its stage, including Ayumi Hamasaki, Glay, and SMAP.

Star M Entertainment announced the news in Japan with Rain and said, "With Japan as the axis, Rain spread the wave to Southeast Asia. Now he's reconfirming his stature with the concert at the Tokyo Dome."

The performance at the Tokyo Dome means Rain is one step further from being just an Asian celebrity and one step closer to being a world star. The Dome can hold up to 42,000 people but it requires a minimum of 35,000 tickets to be sold. Only top-selling performers attempt to play there. Among Korean celebrities, Lee Byung-heon held a fan meeting at the Dome last June with 42,000 guests. The Japanese press at the time made a great fuss, calling it the biggest event in the history of the "Korean Wave."

Lingering rumors say that Star M Entertainment was worried about bringing Rain's tour to the Dome, which would mean just once performance there. Rain, however, decided to go ahead with the idea, believing himself to be "Asia's singer" and eager to be the first Korean singer to perform at the fabled stadium. It is said that the concert promoter's Japanese partner UAE strongly pushed for the concert at the massive stadium.

The Stamford Plaza Hotel in Sydney on Wednesday was bustling with about 100 reporters and photographers from all over Asia and Australia. They were there for a press conference with Rain who had arrived a few days ahead of his Saturday concert, his first show in Australia and part of his "Rain's Coming" world tour.

Journalists from the Sydney Morning Herald, ABC TV, Rueters TV and other local and international news outlets turned their attention to the Korean pop singer who is rapidly becoming a global star

Rain arrived in Australia on Tuesday to find a crowd of 150 fans waiting for him at Sydney Airport. Despite a hiccup in the tour date -- the concert was postponed a week because of a venue change -- ticket sales have been going well. Even the Easter holidays didn't slow down the weekend bookings.

Rain will take to the stage on Saturday at Acer Arena, where other top international acts such as the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Beyonce Knowles have performed.

Rain told reporters that his 5th album, to be released next year, will target the global market.

Seoul singer Rain has the girls falling for him

JAFFA the koala swept into a press conference in Sydney yesterday and hardly blinked as a barrage of eager photographers snapped, flashed and just occasionally drooled at what was in front of them.
Like the few fellow Australians around the room, Jaffa must have been wondering what all the fuss was about.

It was about Rain, a 24-year-old Korean pop star whose popularity across East Asia puts him on a par with Justin Timberlake, Beyonce and Pink.

The singer from Seoul is making his Australian debut in Sydney on Saturday and scores of Asian reporters, photographers and television crews turned out to publicise the fact at Double Bay's Stamford Plaza Hotel.

They were joined by a few dozen dreamy-eyed young women keen to catch a glimpse of their idol.

"His personality is very good and of course he is good looking," said 26-year-old Kathleen Lin, one of the fans who had been waiting outside for several hours. "When he smiles, no one can resist it."

Jaffa resisted as best it could when joined on stage by the young star, who was nominated in the top 100 most influential people on the planet by Time magazine last year.

The cross-cultural photo op over, the singer explained through an interpreter why he had earned comparisons with American pop idol Timberlake.

"They compared me to him because they didn't know who else to compare me to," said Rain, whose real name is Jung Ji-hoon. "But, as a fan of his, I'm honoured to be compared to him."

Rain has sold millions of albums throughout East Asia since his music career took off in 2002. He is also a successful actor, having starred in TV drama series such as Full House and Sang Doo! Let's Go To School in Korea.

Now his pop credentials are taking him around the globe - in a Korean Air jet that has his face emblazoned on its side.

Rain hopes to broaden his appeal by recording an album in English later this year.

"He's different, which is why he doesn't have many Western fans," Ms Lin said. "But Asian girls like him very much."

Some 60 students of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government stomp and whistle, while several shout in Korean, "I love you!" and "You are gorgeous!" They are responding to the image of their hero, the workaholic Korean superstar, on the screen. A shot of the singer’s six-pack prompts some female students to sigh, "Oh, my god." All of them laugh. Twenty minutes later Rain, in a beige jacket and jeans, appears on the podium and the room erupts in a blizzard of flashlights.

K-pop superstar Rain shows a Harvard school mug given to him by students from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government at the office of JYP Entertainment in Cheong-dam dong, Seoul on Tuesday.

"Nice to meet you all from Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government," Rain says in English before answering questions from students for 20 minutes. Rain will go to Taiwan on 31st March for his 2006/07 Rain’s Coming World Tour concert. The tickets, price range from NT$ 800 to NT$ 6,000, is scheduled to be on sale next week. The venue will be at Taoyuan County Stadium, Taoyuan county. The organiser has planned to open two-third of the stadium and is targetting 25,000 people to attend this concert.
Rain will probably stay in Taiwan for 5 days - 28th March will have a press conference, rehearsals until the actual concert day (31st March). And he will include a secret guest for his concert in Taiwan. The organiser will also donate some of the ticket sales to charity.

Cyborg Will Be Screened In Vietnam

VietNamNet Bridge – Cinema-goers in town will have a chance to see the well-known Korean pop star, Bi-Rain, in the romantic comedy film 'I'm a Cyborg but that's OK' which will screen in HCMC on March 16.

The film tells about a girl who thinks she is a cyborg and is admitted into a mental hospital, a shelter for people who have had an unfortunate childhood or been shocked by a tragic accident. In the hospital she falls in love with another patient who is a kleptomaniac.

The film is directed by Park Chan-Wook. Actress Im Soo-Jung has been cast in the role of the cyborg girl and Jeong Ji Hun (Bi-Rain) plays the part of the man with kleptomania.

The film will be screened at the following cinemas in HCMC:

World Tour - Vietnam Concert

I just got back from reading about what happened in his concert in Vietnam. From the photos of his arrival to his tour of the streets and the presscon, I have a feeling the Rain enjoyed his stay there.

I just finished checking the fan accounts of the concert last weekend and I had mixed feelings about it. According to accounts the first night was half full even if the concert producers lowered the prices of the concert ticket. Some say it's because the ticket price is way beyond the budget of his local fans. Although the second night was more successful in terms of attendance it was mainly attributed to the free tickets given to sponsors of the concert. I just hope those free tickets were given to Rain fans who can't afford the tickets but were dying to see him perform. The venue was big and having two concerts may be too much of an expectation.

What made me sad and from what I gathered also made Rain sad, was the fact that people started leaving the venue even before Rain finished his last two songs. According to those present during the concert the reason why people left early is because it's hard to get public transportation in the area. While others jostled for positions backstage so they can see him up close. But if you paid your hard earned money to someone who is giving you a performance worth every cent then it's but natural to get the most out of it. Rain is well known to give encore performances if his audience ask for it. But then again, maybe it's their culture to seek artist leaving concert venues but I would have been better if Rain was advised to expect such situation.

But most importantly, it's disheartening for any artist who gives his all in his concert and have his audience leave before he even finishes. It's like saying to the artist that the concert was not worth it and his performance below your expectations.

I know his Vietnamese fans love him and respect him and that the actions of some is not reflective of the entire country. Let's just hope there will be no repeat of such incident if he ever comes to Vietnam to perform again.

What is the happiest thing happening to you in your world tour “Rain’s coming”? And what tires you the most?

The happiest thing to me is to meet fans from all over the world and see the warm feelings they have for me during the tour.

Arriving in Vietnam, I was touched to see young fans waiting for me at the airport in the middle of the night. I have just walked out of New World Hotel to say hi to hundreds of young fans waiting for me on the street for the whole afternoon. And perhaps having to travel too much has been tiring me.

The two Hollywood stars Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie rode on a motorbike to see HCM City. Do you plan to do so too?

If I have any free time, I will certainly ride a motorbike to a pho restaurant in Saigon. I absolutely have no worry about doing such an interesting thing.

If you’re invited to be Vietnam’s tourism ambassador, will you be willing to introduce Vietnam to people in the Republic of Korea, Asia and the US?

I’m willing to talk about your country. I consider my trip a chance for me to learn many things.

So what will you say about Vietnam?

I’ll say,”Vietnam makes a lot of good impressions on me. The Vietnamese traditional dress and cone hat for women are very beautiful. And this country’s cuisine is great with many excellent dishes.”

Where does your success come from? What should the young people who dream of becoming a star like you do in order to succeed?

I think that in order to succeed, you have to try your best in your work. You must believe that it is you who are best in what you’re doing.

What are the three most important things in your life?

They are to love myself, to love my family and to have good relationships with people around me.

What made you want to organize the Rain’s Coming world tour?

The American musical market is the centre of the world. But I think Asia has its own cultural features. We can conquer the world with our cultures. The purpose of my world tour is to introduce to the world the beauty of Asian music. I also want to bring to my fans an impressive and unforgettable programme.

Why did you want to be a World Vision ambassador to help AIDS patients?

I’m a small person who doesn’t know what to do to help AIDS patients. Through my songs, I hope to ease their pain.

Why did you choose an angel’s wings as the symbol of your Rain’s Coming tour?

Through the image of an angel soaring, I want to send the message that peace always defeats war. The world in which we’re living always hopes for peace.

Tidbits from the Fan Meeting

1. Jihoon was really happy today. He laughed from his heart.

2. Received many presents, mini-bike, electronic organ, wallet, toys...
Organ was from Benamoo. Jihoon was a little taken aback. Did not expect so many expensive gifts. He was really happy.

3. Our adorable mister said he likes wearing tight underwear. Because of his vigorous dancing, he needs more protection. Everybody broke their back laughing at that one.

4. Said his reasons for existence were his children, his family, his collegues, his fans, and food! Delicious food!
Said he loved delicious food too much, and wanted to spend his life tasting delicacies from all over the world.

5. When Jihoon was cutting the cake, Jaedong asked him how old was he. He said in a child-like voice, "5!". Then he turned red. Cute!!

6. Jihoon described how fans from all over the world address him: Local and Taiwan fans go "Rain!" The voice is a little loud and rough. Japan fans go "Jihoon-ni~~!" in a soft and gentle voice. Then he said local fans are so full of vitality, and the China fans shouted his name loudly from behind too (Very energised too!)

7. When fans were performing, the Taiwan fans performed "I'm Coming". One fan wore his face mask, and that tickled Jihoon a lot. The girl in the middle danced really well. Jihoon noticed her a lot and then said, "fantastic!"

8. During the performance, they imitated Jihoon's Singapore interview with a spoon. Jihoon ran to the back of the stage and laughed.

9. A Singapore fan wrote a letter, saying that she's a loyal fan. She wishes him happiness forever and will always supports him.
The content is something like that, but her Korean was a little harsh. Especially her use of "loyal" and "support".

Rain Glazes Over Slanderous Report With A Smile

With regards to the rude and arrogant Singapore report, "World Star" Rain adopted a maganimous attitude and glazes over it with a smile. Rain held a press conference in Seoul this afternoon for his '07 Meeting of Rain's Fans event. Not long after the commencement of the press conference, Rain revealed, "I've seen similar reports in the internet. These reports which are based on twisted facts are meant to stir up trouble. Those people do not give objective reports, but simply criticise and give negative reviews because the subject is a Korean." Rain also said, "Replying to those malicious reports will only end up giving me a headache. Working hard and showing the public my potential is my best answer to these reports. K-pop star Rain met with 3,000 fans from 20 countries during a special fan meeting event held at the Weight Lifting Stadium in the Olympic Park, southern Seoul on Sunday. The meeting titled "Rain's Friend _ '07 Meeting of Rain's Fans" gave the pop star an opportunity to become closer with members from his fan club. During the meeting hosted by popular MC Kim Je-dong, Rain spoke candidly about his life and career, much to the delight of his fans. Fans were allowed to ask Rain some questions. One fan asked how he felt about the negative comments and rumors about him circulating on the Internet. Rain said anyone can be hurt by bad comments, but he sees this as a strong motivation to work harder and prove his detractors wrong. Rain also talked about the five reasons for his existence _ first, the hope of having a daughter that resembles his future wife, not him; second, to give happiness to his family, who went through tough times; third, for his mentor Park Jin-young, staff and close friends who support him; fourth, his fans and fifth, food. When asked about his ideal type of woman, Rain said he is attracted to a pretty face, knockout figure and a good personality. He said that if he has a chance, he wants to get married as soon as possible and have three children. Around 3,000 fans from Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States and the United Kingdom attended the event.

Rain's Latest Movie to Open HK Film Festival

South Korean movie "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK," has been chosen as the opening movie at this year's Hong Kong International Film Festival starting from 19th March.

In just half an hour, all pre-sale tickets for the movie's first screening were sold out.

"I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK," has just received an outstanding creative award in the competition session at the 57th Berlin Film Festival earlier this month.

The director Park Chan-wook, lead actor South Korean pop star Rain and actress Lim Soo-jung are expected to grace the red carpet at the movie's Hong Kong premiere.

This year's Golden Bear winner, Chinese movie "Tuya's Marriage"will also be screened during the film festival at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre on 30th March.

Rain (Bi), "Regret that Asia's cultures can't be united"

Rain (Bi/Jung Ji Hoon) who is currently in his world tour expressed his regret in that Asian culture is not being united

In a phone interview on the 21st, Rain commented, "If Asia's cultures could all unite, it could create another market greater than that of Europe or the U.S. For Korea's music industry to grow, a larger market needs to be created. It is regretful that Asia cannot come together because of differences in traditional cultures or history."

In response to criticism that for Hallyu to spread internationally, it has to overcome nationalism, Rain commented, "The important point is to find a balance between accepting other cultures while delivering ours. Until now, we only tried to bring back something from other countries."

He also commented on the criticisms towards wearing traditional Chinese attire at his concert in China saying, "When Britney Spears came to Korea and wore a Hanbok, I was pleased. If such a thing is acceptable, I thought it wouldn't be bad for me to attempt it as well from the perspective of cultural exchange."

Rain also explained about the attendance of a majority of female fans along with criticisms of imitating Michael Jackson and other singers.

"I never officially debuted in the U.S. but was thankful to those who came to see me just by my name. Being compared to Michael Jackson who I look up to is a great honor but I believe I will have to evolve into my own style."

In response to a question asking if he purposefully selected to appear in the movie 'I'm a Cyborg, but That's Okay' because of renown Park Chan Wook, "I was only thinking of the experimental aspect of the movie and thought it would be interesting and people would like it. I had a belief that I could show a side of myself that was different from the drama series ¡®A Love to Kill.'"

Meanwhile, Rain started his world tour last December with the concert in Seoul and is touring the U.S., Japan, China, Canada, Malaysia, and others totaling twelve different countries. He also visited China recently with Song Hye Gyo to promote the drama series 'Full House.'

Natalie Portman "I wanted to meet Rain"

American Hollywood star Natalie Portman has a new-found interest in Korean superstar Rain, whose film debut, “I’m A Cyborg, But It’s Ok,” is currently being shown at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival.

After viewing the movie at the festival, it has been reported that Portman became interested in its Korean stars. Portman and Rain even talked about meeting but could not, due to tight schedules.

Rain expressed his regret at not being able to meet the Harvard graduate Natalie Portman, who made her film debut in 1994’s “Leon” and has enjoyed success in the “Star Wars Episode” series, as well as other movies like “Everyone I Says I Love You “and “V is for Vendetta.”

Rain will return home on the 14th and then leave the next day for China to promote his hit drama, “Full House,” with his co-star Song Hye-kyo.

Director Park Won An Award For Cyborg

Congratulations to director Park Chan-wook who won the Alfred Bauer Prize for a science fiction comedy at the annual Berlin film festival on Saturday for opening up new perspectives in cinema art.

The award for "I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK," is another major prize for Park since 2004, when he was honored with the Grand Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his film "Old Boy."

I hope this will be the start of the movies winning streak in film festivals around the world.

We had another successful fan event for Rain here in the Philippines last Saturday. Though some of the previous attendees weren't able to join us because of prior commitment at work and with their families we have an influx of members coming from the as far north as Bulacan and South from Cavite and Laguna. One member even came over from Davao just to join our activity.

We had an exhibit of Rain memorabilia that includes his original CD's, DVD of his drama, his Road for Rain photobook, various magazines that feature him on the cover as well as original cloud merchandise being sold in his concerts. Members were free to touch and browse through the magazines.

The program proper was started at late in the afternoon with games that we see in korean shows. I'm sure the winners loved the showcase posters they got as prizes. Then the dance contest started with Rizza, Hiroko and Charity dancing to the song With You. We were all awestruck with Hiroko's appearance when she made her entrance. She really made an effort to dress like Bi and do the moves done by Rain at the showcase last October when he first performed the song. I hope the video can be edited soon so that I can show you the clip. Then it was the turn of Rain's Angels headed by Precious, Liphaee and Rainzelle who rocked the house with Touch Ya. I heard they only met 3 times to practice but they were so into the groove of the song. It was a tough call for the judges to decide.

But the dancing is still not over, Christine gave a copy of Rain's "I'm Coming" and "With You" MV to a group of dancers that she knew and asked them to practice the moves. She invited them over to perform for us. Their dance number bought the house down, we were literally singing our hearts out as they danced the exact steps that we are so familiar with while some of us can't help but join them in dancing though we kept ourselves at the sides.

Soon two hours have passed and it was time to end the program. Rain's Angel won the dance contest. Grace went home with the grand raffle prize that night, an original Rain tumbler that was sold during the Seoul concert. But more prizes were also won by members so they all went home with a smile on their faces.

A big thank you to everyone who came and joined in the fun. Same goes to our friends who donated their Rain stuff, time and even funds to make it enjoyable for everyone. I'll post photos next time.

Park's zany cyborg romantic comedy scores in Berlin

Berlin (dpa) - South Korean director Park Chan-wook admits that his film I'm a cyborg, but that's Ok (Sai bo gu ji man gwen chan a), which had its international premiere at the Berlin Film Festival is unlikely to make him a lot of money.

Set in a psychiatric hospital, it is an off-the-wall romantic comedy which tells the story of Park Il-soon and Cha Young-goon, who thinks she is a human robot or cyborg.

In the film, Park Chan-wook said he increasingly digressed from reality and into the surreal and non-reality.

He wanted his film to have "a different take on humanity."

But the zany humour and unconventional if not baffling storyline have so far not helped to make I'm a cyborg, but that's Ok a resounding success in Park's home country.

Speaking at a press conference following a screening of the film, the director confessed that even his young son was a little unsure of what to make of I'm a cyborg, but that's Ok.

However Park's film has already scored well with many film critics attending this year's Berlinale, which likes to celebrate movies that are edgy and pull back from the mainstream.

But Park's Cyborg with its carefree music score and host of colourful characters is by no means a Korean-style take on the American seventies film classic One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

For one in Park's film, the inmates appear to enjoy a relatively relaxed relationship with those who are charged with their welfare, including battling it out in ping-pong matches.

Featuring Korean pop star Rain (Jung Ji-hoon) as the kooky Park Il-soon, the story of cyborg is told against the backdrop of a carefree musical score and an extraordinary set of visuals.

It also represents a dramatic change from the more intense movies that Park has directed in recent years.

Traumatized after her much-beloved grandmother (who spends her days eating radishes and feeding mice) Young-goon is dispatched to the funny farm.

Convinced she is a cyborg, Young-goon also ends up in a clinic with Park Il, who has a penchant for wearing masks and is accused of stealing other people's characteristics, including developing the art of yodelling.

Instead of eating, Young-goon tries to recharge what she things are her inner batteries. Aided by her grandmother's dentures, which she uses to communicate with lights and vending machines, Young-goon embarks on a journey to discover the purpose of her existence.

Along the way, she displays the darker side of her character by hallucinating about taking revenge on those who have taken her grandmother away.

It was not easy playing Young-goon said Lim Soo-Jung. She said she did not have a real outline of the character. "It was a blank sheet of paper I had to fill in," she said.

But whatever the audiences might think about Park's cyborg, it represents a triumph for Jung Ji-hoon, which is his first feature film.

Indeed, cyborg appears to be have been a successful vehicle for Jung's transformation from Asian pop sensation Rain to serious movie star, with the 24-year-old pop star-turned-actor bringing a freshness to his role.

"Many people were surprised that I took on the character because he was a bit loony," said Jung.

"But it is a transitional phase for me, because I could move away from the image I have and become a real actor," he said. "I wanted to be reborn."

However, as is the case with Park's other movies there are political messages behind his cyborg film.

Coming of age during the 1980's, Park believes that Seoul's political clampdown on student critics was a major force in shaping his work and to develop an interest in violence which even emerges in cyborg.

The state or the system is always in the background of his movies, he said. "The force of the individual is overwhelmed by this."

But Park also wants to convey another message about the role of machinery and technology in modern life.

Park insists he not necessarily critical of the rapid development of technology.

"I am constantly pointing at technology and the overwhelming application in our lives," said Park.

"The machines have a clear purpose in their lives," he said, which is why the Young-goon character is so attracted to machines.

They have a set of instructions on how we are to live out lives, explained Park.

Rain, Im Soo-jeong to Attend Berlin Film Festival

The two main leads of the film "I'm a Cyborg, but That's OK"--Jeong Ji-hoon, better known as singer Rain, and actress Im Soo-jeong--will attend the Berlin International Film Festival.

Im will hold a news conference and attend a red carpet event and a movie premiere on Friday. More interviews with the foreign media are scheduled for the weekend in the German capital.

Im has previously attended the Berlin festival for her 2003 film "A Tale of Two Sisters" (director Kim Ji-woon), and this is her second visit as "Cyborg" was officially invited to compete in the festival.

In "Cyborg," the 28-year-old actress plays a clueless girl who believes herself to be a cyborg, opposite singer Rain, who made his big screen debut in the film.

Where Did I Go Wrong

Seems I've created more confusion when I replied to a posting by one sister in CPH forum. The said sister was excited to know that Rain will be coming over to our country without noticing that the last posting was way back Dec. 2006 when we were still hopeful that a promoter from our country is negotiating with Star M. But it's now February and the chances of him coming over is getting dimmer as the day passes by.

I've posted the following comment "Sorry to rain on your parade but there's still no confirmation on his coming here for the concert. Now if he plans to come over for an unannounced vacation, that's another matter all together." But it seems that the word IF on my second statement was got lost in their comprehension due to their excitement. So now they are asking if he is indeed coming for a vacation and if we can find more details about it even if it unannounced so that we can prepare gifts and plan on seeing him.

Now I don't blame Agent P for wanting to smack me in the head. Lesson learned...to not just write my comments on sensitive matters in the most basic sentence construction to avoid misunderstanding and maybe do a translation in our local dialect.

It's a cold yet heart-warming day

I saw Rain at the office last night.
We've made a decision with regards to the fan-meeting's date.
I immediately posted a notice on it.
We've been trying to fix a date for the fan-meeting since mid-December.
But as everybody knows, it's really tough to find a date with the World Tour going on.

I'm really happy we've finally firmed a date. But ...in order to see Rain
There will be Clouds coming all the way to Korea to participate in this fan-meeting
Also, Rain himself is really looking forward to the event.
When I think about this, I know I must do a good job. The huge responsibility is starting to worry me...

Because of the World Tour, it has been difficult trying to leave messages.

That's why I'm only leaving a message now that I'm back in Korea (A little late, heehee)

Having successfully completed the Malaysia concert, I am now back in Korea,
and is currently taking a short break.

I am now at the filming site, and taking the opportunity of my short break to come online.

I've been reading some fan accounts of his Malaysian concert and it seems it was a resounding success not just in terms of ticket sales but more so with the interaction he had with his audience.

He really improved in his ability to connect with his fans, no more memorized english script. To those who were there, he appeared very spontenous in his approach. He called them babies and said "I love you" a lot. I'm sure all the ladies in the audience were in cloud nine.

Money All Used Up; Singapore Fans See Rain Off In Tears Last Night

Rain hid in his room and watch DVD yesterday

Korean pop idol Rain loves seafood, doesn't talk much, but often ask after the staff working with him.

We asked the Singapore concert organiser, Xu Shan Jun, about the things that Rain likes, she said, "Rain loves seafood like octopus, squids, sotong. He also loves pandan cake."

After his concert last Sunday, Xu Shan Jun said Rain asked her to buy him a cake. He then went with his crew for dinner at a Korean restaurant, followed by a one-hour celebration at St James Powerhouse. It was 2am when he reached his hotel, so he aborted the idea of going for a swim and went back to rest in his room instead.

Rain is here in Singapore for the first time since his debut as a singer. Other than going to Jewel box at Mt Faber for his press conference and cable car ride, rehearsing at the Indoor Stadium, going to the celebration party at St James and having meals at the Korean restaurant, he almost did not go anywhere else for sightseeing. Xu Shan Jun said, "This is because it's really troublesome for him to go out. He has to have 10 bodyguards accompanying him; It's very tough for him to go out on walking on his own. That's why he was in his room most the yesterday, probably watching DVD."

Talking about her impression of Rain, Xu said," I feel he's a very hardworking artiste. He doesn't talk much, and doesn't put on superstar airs. Every time he rehearses, he says 'Thank You' and 'Goodbye' to the crew members. Although his arm was injured, he did the full works during the concert and didn't make any special requests."

Korean artistes are particular about their privacy. The media wanted to interview his manager to understand his schedule, but his manager rejected the interview.

Teary fans bid goodbye to Rain

On the fans' side, local fanclub moderator Lu Fang Mei said, "His performance was fantastic in Singapore, and he was very happy. Perhaps Rain saw how passionate his fans are. Taiwan fans said that the atmosphere at the Singapore concert was better than the Hong Kong concert. From Rain's performance, you could tell he was very happy. For examply, he threw his bouquet and towels to fans off the stage. He also interacted with smiles and looks. The only drawback was that the concert was too short!"

Lu Fang Mei said, Rain even shook hands with his fans before leaving the venue in his car.

After the concert, Rain fans were busy trying to get the concert merchandise. Lu said "I spent S$150 on a t-shirt, two calendars and a keychain accessory. I heard some fans spent more than S$200, and all the merchandise were sold out."

Fans were waiting at the airport at 7pm yesterday, getting ready to see their idol off. Lu said she didn't prepare any special parting gifts, "Because we have given whatever present we can give, and spent whatever money we can spare. So all we could do was see him off in tears."

It RAINed in Singapore

Rain arrived in Singapore last Thursday (January 18) to prepare for his Rain's World Tour yesterday (January 21). Based on all the fan accounts I've read it was a resounding success. And to think that the ticket prices were higher than those sold in other countries.

The only thing that bothered me were the fan accounts that mentioned how he was hurting from a previous injury in his left arm while performing "I'm Coming". The hairline fracture on his arm needs complete rest, but we all know he can't afford to do it so the only option is prevention. But Rain being stubborn continues to do the entire routine that only aggravates his injury. I hope somebody can talk sense to him. A slight variation in his dance routine can ease that pain.

Bi Leaving Hong Kong Wounded

The other day (Jan 15, 2007) at 11:15AM, Rain arrived at the airport, wearing T-shirt, jeans and black framed glasses, he left Hong Kong on an airplane with his picture painted on it (I’m assuming this is the plane for his World Tour). The airport bureau placed two parapets in advance. Rain entered the airport security check area as usual from the staff member line. Before entering the security area, to the 100 waiting fans, while smiling, he waved goodbye. Singapore concerts are not affected Rain was injured at the Hong Kong concert, should he buy insurance and obtain compensation? Rain’s Hong Kong manager Chen Chiaying expressed that Rain bought insurance, but would not disclose the amount of insured value. Chen Chiaying expressed that Rain’s wound condition would not greatly obstruct, will not influence next stop on tour, Singapore's performances. And regarding rumors that the concert’s 2nd night did not sell out and the handing out of free tickets? Chen Chiaying expressed that this was not her responsibility, and was not sure about the situation, she was only responsible for taking care of Rain.

Rain Gets Speeding Ticket in Hong Kong

A car carrying Korea's top pop star Rain was stopped by Hong Kong police last Thursday for violating the speed limit, according to reports.

Rain, who has become an Asian heartthrob, was in Hong Kong Jan. 12-14 for concerts. It was part of the 25-year-old's World tour titled "Rain's Coming." The tour started in Korea last December.

Rain's car was chased by a horde of paparazzi, who have closely followed the star since his arrival Wednesday, reports said. In an attempt to escape the pursuers, Rain’s car sped to 100 km/h exceeding the speed limit of 80 km/h.

As police stopped Rain's car, the following cars of the paparazzi and fans also halted, creating a major traffic disorder. The police charged the driver about 450 Hong Kong dollars, or 54,000 won ($58).

Despite the incident, Rain's Hong Kong concerts thrilled fans with extravagant stage effects and the clean-cut singer’s flashy dance moves, reports said.

We have been hearing about it since Monday but we were still hoping that it will push through. See we have a delegation from Cloud Philippines who are watching the two nights concert and they have already paid for their tickets and airfare last month.

Yesterday they finally got the news that the concert will be postponed for June (no exact date given). Security was the primary concern, not just for Rain and his entourage but for the thousands of fans expected to troop to the venue.

Maybe some of you also purchased a ticket so if you want to get a refund you can get refunds at points of sales from January 22 to February 4. Fans can go to the counter service outlets if they've obtained tickets from them. For those buy through www.majorcineplex.com, they must go to Major Cineplex Ratchayothin branch during the designated period.

It's RAINing in Hong Kong

Bi departed Incheon airport at 8:40am on flight KE603 together with 70 of his crew/staff. A total of 288 people boarded the flight, that is 218 other public passengers. The flight arrived in HK at 11:46am but fans there reported at 12:07pm that he had not come out yet.

Tickets for Rain’s Hong Kong Concert Sold Out

Singer Rain, who is gearing up to conquer the world stage, has sold out the tickets for his Hong Kong concert as part of his world tour “Rain’s Coming.”

As a result, Lee In-kwang, the president of Star M Entertainment, which is in charge of Rain’s world tour, has expressed confidence that the tour will become successful.

“We put priority on concerts in China and the U.S. in this tour. Due to the successful concert in Las Vegas, more concerts can be planned in more U.S. cities including New York and LA, and China is one of the new markets we can explore,” Lee said. “I will do my best for the planned tour to serve as a stepping stone for Rain to rise to world stardom.”

Rain signed a partnership deal with Korean Air for his world tour on Monday. At a press conference held before the signing ceremony, the country’s largest carrier released an airplane bearing the singer’s picture, which will begin flights to coincide with his Hong Kong concert.

Having decided to sponsor Rain’s world tour as part of its win-win strategies, Korean Air will operate the flight from January to May. It will also provide free flights for some 80 tour staff members and 20 tons of concert equipment.

The “Rain’s Coming” world tour began in Seoul on Dec. 15 and 16, with the Las Vegas concert held on Dec. 23 and 24. The Hong Kong concert is scheduled for Jan. 12 and 13, followed by Singapore on Jan. 21, Malaysia on Jan. 27, Thailand on Feb.3 and Vietnam on March 10 and 11. Other nations on the tour include Taiwan, China, Japan, U.S. (LA and New York) and Canada (Toronto).

Seaching High And Low

Yesterday should have been just a typical Sunday morning for me. Wake up late after a marathon watching of whatever drama that took my fancy, have a late breakfast while watching television and then start house cleaning. It took an sms message from another Rain fan to get my ass moving out of the house in my house dress while the sun is up and shining (boy it was hot). Now I'm digressing, the message was that Rain is being featured in one of the biggest newspapers here in the Philippines, not it the enternainment section mind you but in the main section of the paper. And as an added inspiration, they used his recent photo.

So there I was checking out all the newstand that I know in my community at 11:00 am without an umbrella because I was so excited! But my excitement was shortlived, for some unknown reason all the copies of Phil. Daily Inquirer was sold out. I would like to think I have lots of unknown Bi fans in my neighborhood, hehehe....

So I went home frustrated, tired and thirsty...I really want a copy of that newspaper. I may have looked really downcast because my mom suddenly volunteered to check if there are still copies left near the church and the market. So there goes my mom with an umbrella (smart move) and my four year old nephew in tow walking in broad daylight just to get me a copy of the newspaper but sobs...they came back with a big bottle of cola but no PDI.

Good thing Sharlene scanned the paper and posted it in Cloud Philippines. So for those like me who was not lucky to get the paper, here's a short transcript of the article.

"The year 2006 has been very eventful for Korean pop star Jung Ji-hoon, better known as Rain to his legions of fans.

In February, the 24-year old king of K-pop sold out two shows at the Madison Square Garden, New York City. Thanks largely to his killer body and flash dance moves, Rain has successfully built up a reputation in America, although some critics argues that he owes much of his immediate success to American pop stars such as Michael Jackson and Usher from whom he draws out inspiration.

The singer-actor Rain has been named the male celebrity most likely to make 2007 his year. In an online poll by the Sports Chosun, a sister publication of the Chosun Ilbo, between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 asking which male celebrity will make the year his own, Rain came top with 32 percent. In 2006, he rose to stardom on the global stage beyond Asia, making it onto the list of TIME Magazine's 100 most influential people as the first Korean entertainer, and performing at Madison Square Garden in New York in February, a first for an Asian singer. His popularity is to continue this year, too, as he has embarked on world tour he named "Rain's Coming" to coincide with the release of his fourth album.

The nos. 2 and 3 were Song Seung-hun with 24.1 percent and Yoon Kye-sang with 17.2 percent; both just completed their military service. Song started his schedule officially when he visited Japan in December and is currently looking at screeplays. He is expected to stage his comeback either in a drama or a movie soon. Yoon already decided on his first show after his discharge. He is to co-star with Lee Mi-yeon in the SBS drama "Crazy for You", which starts airing in February. Seven, another singer who has taken up acting, was ranked fourth with 12.5 percent. He will star in the MBC drama "Palace S-Prince House", to be aired in October this year, alongside Heo I-jae and Park Shin-hye.

The new year for us Cloud Philippine members seems to be off to a good start. Full House will be making a comeback to our local tv station for it's 3rd run very soon. I personally did not see the trailer but my mom did and it made her day.

And starting yesterday we are going to see him at MTV because he is being featured as Artist of the Month. Is it the sign of his upcoming World Tour to our country? I sure hope so.

Dieter Kosslick, director of the prestigious European film festival, recently sent an official invitation for the offbeat romantic comedy film, according to All That Cinema, a public relations company for films in Seoul.

Director Park will likely visit the German capital during the festival in February along with actor Jung Ji-hoon, also known as singer Rain, and actress Lim Soo-jung, who starred in the film.

It is the second invitation for Park, who enjoys wide popularity among non-Korean audiences as well as domestic fans for his hardcore films such as "Old Boy." His 2000 film "Joint Security Area" was also invited to the Competition of the Berlinale, although it did not score any of the Bear Awards traditionally handed out at the festival.

"Cyborg’" revolves around a young female Yonggun (played by Lim), who believes she is a cyborg and is hospitalized in a psychiatric ward, and a young man named Il-soon (played by Rain) who chases after her.

The star director and cast caused a lot of media attention since the making of the film. But after a nationwide release on Dec. 7, only some 780,000 people have watched the movie at theaters as of Dec. 20. CJ Entertainment, which distributed the film, plans to close the screening around next week.

Rain Aims Higher for World Star

Korean pop superstar Rain, known as "Pi" in Korean, held a successful first concert of his world tour in Las Vegas, the United States at 8 p.m. Las Vegas time on Saturday.

The 24-year-old K-pop star took the stage at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace, aiming to make inroads into the North American market.

It was the largest concert ever given by a Korean artist and his second outing in the U.S., following two sold-out concerts in the Madison Square Garden Theater in New York City last February.

Rain has expanded his fan base from New York in the east to Las Vegas in the west only 10 months after his debut on the U.S. stage.

He was also named one of Time magazine's 100 Most Influential People in the World this year.

About 3,800 fans packed the venue where world-class artist Celine Dion is a resident performer and where Elton John and Gloria Estefan have also given concerts.

About 90 percent of the audiences were Asian fans from Japan, China, Singapore and Taiwan.

At the concert, titled "Rain's Coming," he successfully hosted the two-hour concert in English featuring 21 songs with stunning dance sequences.

"I exist because of your support. My dream has come true," he said in gratitude to a fervent response from his fans.

"I am very proud of Rain who stood up on the stage where world-class pop stars are used to performing," Moon Ji-hyun, 24, who saw the show, said.

The ticket price costing $98-$288 was high, but the concert was sold out just one week after ticket sales opened.

Stage direction was by Jaime King renowned for Madonna's recent "Confessions Tour," and Christina Aguilera's choreography, working with lighting specialist Roy Bennett, and visual director Dago Gonzalez.

Park Jin-young, producer of Rain's music and CEO of the JYP Entertainment, and Lil Jon, producer of "Yeah" sung by Usher attended the concert.

Rain is receiving acclaim as an international celebrity as his first movie "I am a Cyborg, But That's Okay" directed by Park Chan-wook, was invited to the Berlin International Film Festival in the competitions section.

He had been invited to sing at the opening ceremony of the 2006 Doha Asian Games in Qatar, but his tight schedule prevented him from attending.

His world tour will span 35 cities in 12 countries, including Hong Kong Jan. 12-13, Singapore Jan. 21, Malaysia Jan. 27, Thailand Feb. 3, Vietnam March 10-11 and Taiwan, China, Japan, the U.S. and Canada afterwards.

StarM, the entertainment agency organizing the concert, is in charge of coordinating with travel agencies from different countries to make it easier for fans to watch the show.

Rain's World Tour In Seoul

I've been away for the weekend to celebrate christmas with friends so I missed all the news about the the kickoff of Rain's World Tour in Seoul but friends who were patiently waiting for photos and fan accounts last Friday kept me updated on the highlights of the much awaited concert. The most intriguing message I got was a description of his new hairstyle...a combination of punk rock meets Cyborg meets David Beckham.

I'm not liking it but then again, it's just me, there are those who are partial to his new do.

Then comes his costumes for the show. I'm loving his military garb in his previous showcase so I'm glad they kept it.

I also like these simple white shirt and pants though it reminds some of Usher.

But these robe takes first place in my book of "what in the world is that costume." Looks like a cross between an Elvis jacket with that collar and a wrestler's outrageous robes when they enter the ring to slug it out.

A close second will be these one with that red thing on his shoulder. Reminds me of the upholstery of a leather sofa.
While these one makes me think of a toad... ugh!!! Just the thought gave me the creeps.

But it's just the costumes, his performance and the whole technical aspect of the show is something I'm keeping quiet until I get to watch it myself. And knowing Rain and his pefectionist attitude, in my heart I know he will give his 101% everytime he sings. A good friend of mine who was able to watch his two night concert in Seoul only has high praises for it. Here's her account if you are interested.

Rain (Bi)'s debut movie 'Cyborg, but okay' ranks 1st in box office

During the second week of December, singer Rain (Bi)'s debut movie 'Cyborg, but okay' ranked first in the box office, stepping above 'Mr. Robin Kkoshigi (Seducing Mr. Robin)' featuring Daniel Henney. The ranking was based on the number of ticket sales in Seoul.

The romantic comedy 'Cyborg, but okay' starring Rain as a mental patient gathered 810,000 people to the theatres in two days, leading 'Seducing Mr. Robin' which numbered 780,000 by 3,000. Both movies opened on the 7th and have accumulated numbers of 471,000 and 390,000 respectively still placing 'Cyborg, but okay' at the lead.

This past box office ranking cannot completely disregard the support of the fans of Rain and the name value of director Park Chan Wook, however. 'Cyborg, but okay' at the premiere in fact did not receive a high score for mass popularity. On the other hand, the somewhat odd setup of the movie 'Seducing Mr. Robin' which was expected to gather female fans of Daniel Henney did well but was not able to quite surpass 'Cyborg, but okay' which was an unexpected result.

Third in the box office was 'Haebaragi (Sunflower)' which has been gathering an unexpected crowd to the theatres. 48,000 people watched the movie in Seoul on 50 screens over two days of the weekend. The movie that has been in theatres for three weeks has accumulated numbers of 1,237,000.

'Pan's Labyrinth' ranked in at number four followed by 'Saw III,' 'That Summer,' and 'The Departed.'

'Pan's Labyrinth' which is a fantasy based on the internal wars of Spain gathered 416,000 people to the box office in two weeks. 'Saw III' on 39 screens in Seoul gathered 19,000 to the screen over the weekend followed by 'That Summer' at 11,000 which barely led 'The Departed.'

'That Summer' starring Lee Byeong Heon has accumulated ticket sales of 300,000 up to last week, somewhat lackluster to the star power.

Rain Set to Make His Name As Actor

Singer Rain is likely to make his name known to the world once again, but not as singer this time but rather as an actor.

A source from CJ Entertainment, the distributor of the film “I’m a Cyborg but That’s OK” starring Rain and Lim Soo-jung, said Friday that they plan to submit the film to an international film festival. “Given the time, it will likely be the Cannes International Festival to be held in May of next year,” he added.

A film about a romance taking place at a mental hospital, “I’m a Cyborg but That’s OK” is director Park Chan-wook's latest work after his vengeance trilogy--“Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance,” “Old Boy,” and “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance.”

There is a high possibility that the film will be invited to the competition category of the French film festival because the director has established quite a reputation in the global film world and because the film itself presents a different view of the world with unique cinematography. Park received the Grand Prix Du Jury with his “Old Boy” at the Cannes in 2004.

If it is invited, the movie will provide Rain with an opportunity to attend the world’s leading film festival and be in the spotlight of the world media. As singer, he held a concert in New York amid much attention from the U.S. media early this year and was chosen one of the world’s 100 most influential people by the U.S. magazine Time.

There is really no stopping Rain from going global and with it comes a more diverse fan base. We are now coming accross people from Europe Latin and North America and we are not talking about asians living in those parts of the world. Somehow they got to see the talent that the guy has never mind if we don't have an understanding of what his songs are saying. Music after all has a way of bringing people of any race together.

So I just had to smile when I read an article from chosunilbo aboutElettra Rossellini (the grand daughter of actress Ingrid Bergman) mentioning that she is a fan of Rain and even wishes to watch the movie Cyborg. You can read the full article here.

Who knows who else will be mesmerised by Rain after he completes his World Tour. My only wish is that he will take his success in stride and continue to keep his feet planted on the ground.

For Rain, 'Cyborg' may prove a stepping stone to world fame

SEOUL, Dec. 6 (Yonhap) -- Rain may be taking a gamble playing a psychiatric patient for his big-screen debut, but the Korean singer-actor, currently on a world tour, is steadily reinventing himself as he prepares to flood the world stage.

"This will be a new image of me," he told Yonhap News Agency at a downtown cafe in Seoul.

"If I had to pick one, the image of me in the movie is closer to who I really am than the Rain you see on the singing stage."

Rain will debut in "I'm a Cyborg, But That's Okay," directed by Park Chan-wook and set for local release on Thursday. In light of Park's success with "Old Boy," which picked up the Grand Prix at Cannes two years ago, the movie is almost certain to get a worldwide release, something Rain hopes will raise his standing in global terms.

"Now I feel that I have taken the first step," he said. "To me, the issue was that the director was Park Chan-wook. He was the director I liked as a fan, and with whom so many actors wanted to work. I thought there would definitely be things he could teach me (as an actor)."

Ranked among Time's 100 most influential figures this year, Rain has been a superstar in Asia with four albums and three hit TV dramas under his belt, but his star quality hasn't translated into global appeal.

His sold-out shows at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in New York City in February received mixed reviews that pinned him down as a star with more local than universal attraction. His storied past as a struggling backup dancer with a poor family has shadowed his career. Now, at 25, he is finally transcending his past and his homeland with the leap to the silver screen.

Playing a psychiatric ward patient in "Cyborg" required him to shed his onstage persona and appear blank and inexpressive in a bulky white gown. His character, incarcerated for his anti-social behavior that developed after his mother deserted him, falls in love with a girl who believes she is a cyborg, played by Lim Soo-jung.

Despite his commended acting in South Korean TV dramas, Rain, who uses his real name Jeong Ji-hun for the film, said he had some headaches acting for the big screen.

"The reason it was so difficult was because, you know, you look sad when you're sad, you laugh when something is funny - but the director wasn't happy."

"I asked him how I should act, and he said, 'You are sad, but you shouldn't be sad.' I asked, 'Wouldn't it be better to show some sign of tears?' He said, 'No, maybe not.' But I did well-up in one scene. It was declared an NG at the time, but he used it, maybe because my feelings were genuine."

Rain was referring to a scene where his character looks at the cyborg's scrawny, naked body as she refuses to eat. He finally gets her to swallow a spoonful of rice by inventing a tool that transforms food into energy.

Park said that casting Rain totally changed the dynamic of the film. What was originally intended to be an experimental and low-budget affair ended up needing rewrites and more cash to fit his star persona.

"I initially thought of this film as one of my HD projects, or something in-between," Park said at a recent press screening, "But that idea was thrown out because Jeong Ji-hun was cast."

Rain's caring, supportive role in the film fits with his kind image, but not with his reputation as a self-made man who trains mercilessly to stay on top. When starting out, he famously plastered his bedroom walls with inspirational mottos like "You will fall the moment you relax."

Fortunately, mentor and singer Park Jin-young was there to provide a safety net after his first high-school band collapsed. Park, a famous singer himself, spotted the young back-up dancer at an audition and decided to mentor him. The result? Rain's debut album "Bad Guy" came out in 2002.

But his past refused to sink quietly into the background. He broke down while accepting the top prize at the KBS annual music awards in 2004 while paying tribute to his mother, who died from complications of diabetes before his album came out. More tears followed at a concert in January 2005. Stories about his impoverished family circulated.

Not that the rumor-mongers hampered his success. Rain was the first Asian to hold a concert at the U.S. prestigious Madison Square Garden, and his fourth album "Rain's World" was released across Asia last month. He now has world tour commitments in Seoul, Las Vegas and Singapore among others.

"Cyborg" co-star Lim says his success is a product of hard graft and intense self-discipline.

"He's really tough on himself," Lim said. "While shooting the film, he had to practice singing and dancing while juggling schedules abroad, but still when it came time to shoot, he became Il-sun (his character) and got totally immersed in it, which wouldn't be possible if he weren't so focused."

With his trademark charm, washboard abs and slender, yet muscular body not on show in the movie, Rain's staking everything on his ability to act -- and Park's ability to direct.

"Like everybody knows, he's really famous in Europe and elsewhere. He's really a world-renowned director, so hopefully our movie will be screened widely overseas."

What's With The Lightstick

The cloudmaster made an announcement on the official lightstick that they are encouraging fans especially those attending the concert to purchase. For those not so familiar with the korean music scene, fans are usually seen holding one and shaking it all through the entire show. I wonder if their arms ever ache?

But now joyplace is being bombarded by complaints from fans of Seven who feels the design is somewhat similar to theirs and by HOT fans who are known to have the monopoly of the color white. Another info for you, official fan colors are a big thing too since it distinguishes them from other groups especially in events where a lot of singers are featured. I know blue is for G.O.D., orange is for Shinhwa, green lightsticks with stars are for D.V.X.Q., a 7 shaped green lightstick represents the fans of singer Seven. But there are still a lot of colors so if it's such an issue why not change it to something like purple or yellow???

Jung Ji Hoon, "Wanted to take director's abilities"

Singer Rain (Bi) who is also actor Jung Ji Hoon had a meaningful initiation rite. Jung Ji Hoon who is making his screen debut through the movie 'Cyborg, but that's okay,' that will be opening on the 7th and is directed by Park Chan Wook, showed more charm as an actor than his previous drama series.

At a press conference held just after the premiere on the 1st, Jung Ji Hoon commented regarding his character Park Il Soon, "Before I started acting this character, I was very frustrated and worried."

The 'mentally ill' Il Soon who constantly commits theft after thinking the reason his mother ran away was because of himself meets and falls in love with Young Goon (played by Lim Soo Jung) who believes herself to be a cyborg. Through Il Soon's 'serious' efforts to feed Young Goon who is suffering from anorexia, the audience soon realizes the true meaning of love.

In response to a question asking what type of ability he would steal if he was able to just as Il Soon, Jung Ji Hoon said, "I wanted to become the president when I was young. Of course that cannot be achieved by stealing someone's abilities. During the filming, I wanted to steal the director's abilities and switch the positions we were in," indirectly expressing his distress as an actor.

"It was hard to express the many different emotions in the mental hospital such as the melodrama, thrill, pain, sadness, and others. But after thinking 'this type of genre and character has never been created before so I can create it myself,' I became a little more comfortable. The character seems to be normal one second and confused in a third dimension the next. The set environment was great so I think Lim Soo Jung and I were both able to act naturally in a confused state."

Lim Soo Jung who played Cha Young Goon, a character that closes herself off from the world after being forced to part with her grandmother who believed herself to be a mouse, commented, "I had to constantly be on a diet through the filming so I was naturally able to understand Young Goon's emotions."

Lim Soo Jung who was not able to have a complete meal due to the character's anorexia said, "Whenever the meals were served, Jung Ji Hoon, the director, and even the entire staff seemed so mean. I was always hungry, always angry, and felt it was unfair that I was the only one that couldn't eat. So when Young Goon sang 'Silent food (Goyohan bap; bam-night, bap-food), Holy food (georookhan bap)' I was better able to understand her state of mind." Lim Soo Jung is said to have weighed as less as 38kg during the movie.

In regards to the character Young Goon, Lim Soo Jung said, "She is a very unrealistic character. I wasn't sure how to express her but when Song Gang Ho at the crank up ceremony told me, 'You are very lucky as an actress to have been able to meet such a character and movie. The character is a white sheet of paper that can play around freely within the fences that the director, co-stars, and staff have set up,' all my worries disappeared at once."

Increasing overseas ticket selling!, for Seoul "I'm Coming"

The demand for concert tickets in Seoul was ncreased drastically, especially among overseas fans!

According to the representative of NetWorkLine (Seoul concert organiser), "Considering the benefits of Korean fans, we are quite conservative in overseas ticketing... However, we can't keep these overseas fans waiting so long since they kept on calling about Seoul concerts. Thus, the call & service centre was quite busy with overseas enquiries starting from Nov 21..."

Even though Rain's world tour is going to cover some countries, overseas fans also showed great interest in the first concert - Seoul concerts.

Rain who is probably still practising in USA, expressed his happiness after hearing this news "I really wanna thank Asian fans for their supports, and I'll work harder to perform the best on stage."

Rain's Seoul concerts will be held on Dec 15 & 16 at Jamsil Olympia stadium.

Self-directed drama by Rain? No, it's a big loss to him!

Singer RAIN has expressed his decision to take legal action against those involved in the spreading of his unreleased new song. With regards to the comments from internet "This is just a self-directed drama..." "They just wanna make up some news", Rain's entertainment agency JYPE has denied these comments and said they are ridiculous!

Other than overseas websites, this song is also widely spread around most famous Korean websites. This is a duet song between Rain and Omarion, a famous American R&B singer.

From a telephone interview with JYPE spokesman on Nov 21, "It was like a precious being stolen from us, how can people say 'they purposely want to bring up news'? Rain and Omarion both experienced losses... This song is composed by Park Jinyoung, even great singer like Chris Brown is deeply impressed by his talent! An artistry work between Eastern and Western genius is simply wasted like this... Originally, we plan to produce this song as an international single, as well as filming MV. Also we intend to include this song in Rain's next album or sell to USA pop singers... Yet now everything is gone.. "

So far, JYPE determined that the master copy might be released accidentally in foreign countries, and they are now tracing the possible exposure channels of master copy. Meanwhile, JYPE also issued official investigation document to the related personnels (from Sony BMG and TUG) that handled master copy.

When the movie "Cyborg" was about to show, Director Park Chan Wook kept smiling. This is not his first his first or second movie, but this time, it feels like he's awarded with a special prize. That's because the censorship board rated this movie as "12 and above". Director Park has been working hard to make this a movie which fathers can take their daughters to. In the past, he had believed that "Sympathy for Lady Vengence" would be rated 15 and above, but he was dealt with a blow. So this time, it's double joy for him. Q: This time, the participation of Rain attracted much attraction. How did you two first meet?

park: I got to know about Rain through Park Jinyoung. Once, when we were having dinner with some other people, Park Jinyoung started handing out CDs, one for each person. The CD says "Rain". Park: During the sound dubbing for "Sympathy for Lady Vengence", Rain came to visit our production team. After work, we went for a drink together. We had drinks together again during the VIP movie premier. Because Sung Kang-ho and Chol Min-chi like him a lot, so I unconsciously, I trusted him too. At first when I was preparing to film a movie with youthful theme, my mind was all filled with images of Rain. I didn't have time to go think about other actors. It's exactly the same case when I was filming "Sympathy for Lady Vengence". The first person I thought of was Lee Young-ae.

Q: Now that you know Rain, what do you think of this person?

Q: How's Rain as an actor?

Q: What's the story behind choosing Im Soo Jung as Rain's co-actress?

A Walk For The Love Of Rain

We finally got the Eternal Rain posters promised by MCA Music last Tuesday and we (Cloud Ph members) decided to post some posters of his Eternal Rain album in the korean establishments in the area that is known as "Little Korea" of Makati.

Meeting place was at Mc Donalds Jupiter so we can distribute posters to those we bought their album without the free poster. After an hour we went started our walk in groups of two.

We went and talked to the owners of internet cafe's, korean restaurants, grocery stores, video rental shops and karaoke bars to request that they allow the poster of Rain to be placed in the facade of their stores.

It was a long tiring walk but with friends around to keep you company, it was all worth it.

Rain is going to proclaim war against the illegal ticket selling!

According to NetWorkLive's annoucement on Nov 17, they will sue the persons involved in illegal ticket selling or entering the concert hall using illegal tickets. NetWorkLive is the organiser of Seoul concerts at Jamsil Olympia stadium on Dec 15 & 16. In the first round of ticket booking on Nov 2, all 10,000 tickets were sold out shortly. The server of ticketing even went down within 3 minutes!

Although there's no high price illegal ticket so far, they are worry that some people may resell the concert tickets to fans at unreasonably high price, especially those who are not able to buy ticket in the second round of ticketing on Nov 20, 4pm.

In fact, the free tickets for Rain's Showcase on Oct 13 were also sold at 250,000 Won to fans through internet.

Bi-Kyo Shippers Are Now In Cloud 9

News about Rain bringing a kimbap/lunch box which he especially made for Song Hye-Kyo at the shooting of her latest movie Hwangjini is spreading like wild fire. Rain arrived at around 11:00pm last November 10 while everyone at the filming site was eating snacks. As expeced everyone was surprised by his visit specially the girls who were there were envious of SHG. As a sign of appreciation and thank's SHG accompany Rain to the parking lot.

Of course reactions are mixed, some of us who've been waiting for the confirmation of their relationship are now jumping for joy that he is slowly, slowly testing the waters. In his latest film, director Park Chan-wook has chosen love as his subject matter instead of his usual theme of revenge. The main actor of the film, Jeong Ji-hoon, also known as "Rain," also made an interesting choice: film instead of TV soap operas. His film debut is drawing a lot of attention. The movie has not yet been released, so his performance in the movie will be judged later. But after a four year TV career as a singer and an actor, his screen debut as the main actor of "I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK" directed by Park is stimulating the curiosity of movie-goers. He may have felt pressure, expectations, and challenge. But when he was interviewed, what he mentioned first was about how great director Park was. "What do I think about Park? He is the consummate Korean movie director. Many people asked me about the pressure, but I was just grateful for this opportunity. That was all I felt during the shooting. Rain And The Year-End Daesang Awards

Those who are into k-pop are eagerly anticipating the various Music Awards given at the end of the year. Winning the much coveted "Daesang" or Artist of the Year is every singers dream and fans go all out in supporting their favorites. From buying original cds and dvd's in Korea so they can be counted in the total sales necessary to be nominated in the awards to voting 24/7 once the links to people's choice are posted in various music awards website. It's a frenzy and I should know because I've been voting too.

But last week accusations have been thrown against one of the biggest if not the biggest management company in Korea for vote buying to rigging the online polls. It's now causing some supporters of other artists also nominated in the awards to bombard the award giving bodies with calls and letters expressing their anger and protest. And what I find surprising in all of these is the fact that a lot of the fans of the boyband are also against the management company. They want their idols to win fair and square with to cloud of doubt hanging on their heads.

Now news of major stars like our own Rain, Seven, Boa and even Shinhwa not attending the awards are making news. How boring will it be if all my fave's will not be there to receive their awards just in case they won.

I guess it's a wake-up call for them to clean their acts and I'm still hoping that Rain and his 4th album will get recognized.

According to Korean online media MyDaily, Rain did mention that he would like to kiss with his beloved on Christmas. And also, he revealed that he has someone in his mind!!

Rain attended KBS 2TV which was released on Nov 14 at 11.05pm. In this programme he mentioned that "I have someone in my mind, but haven't told her yet... I'm prepared to love someone but always lack of courage to tell..."

He continued, "If I have a girlfriend, I would like to go shopping with her, buying some clothes. In the evening, watching the beautiful night scenes with her, and enjoy a wonderful dinner..." He really wished to enjoy normal dating like others.

"I heard that there's a place in Seoul (around Ming Dong area) will switch off all lights so that couples can kiss there... I would like to try..." Before he said more, a singer commented, "Go there in this Christmas and you can kiss with Rain..." Immediately the audience laughed~~

Up In The Cloud!

We just had our very first "Cloud Philippines" fan event last Saturday, November 11, 2006 and YES it was a success! Thank you to those who attended the event, it was nice to see new faces and of course it was a joy to be in a room with people you have already known from all those meetings we had two months back.

Oh my vegetable!!! Lai and Charity were such great host that we kept laughing the whole time they facilitated the games and games. Now ladies you have to brush up on your english and japanese so you won't complain of having nosebleed from translating your spiels.

I know we only have a week to rest our minds and bodies before preparing for the next fan event but if the crowd is as fun and appreciate as the ones who came, I'll say bring it on!!!

Bi (Rain) Jung Ji Hoon, "Filled with a message of hope"

Director Park Chan Wook's newest film 'Cyborg, but okay' (Moho Film Production) held a production press conference at the Seoul Imperial Palace Hotel on the 9th.

This is the first film that fulfilled Director Park's wish of directing a melodrama movie. The genre is also a romantic comedy. The overall plot and expressions have gotten much brighter compared to his previous film as well.

This movie gathered attention as the 'world star' Jung Ji Hoon (Bi) and Lim Soo Jung who is known for her well-acted roles were casted as the main leads and is Jung Ji Hoon's first appearance on the big screen.

The movie is set in a mental hospital and is about the love story of Young Goon (Lim Soo Jung) who believes herself is a cyborg and Il Soon (Jung Ji Hoon) who loves her regardless.

At the press conference, Director Park, Jung Ji Hoon, Lim Soo Jung, and others were present.

Director Park said he created a movie that seems like it would smell fresh and fruity while Lim Soo Jung commented that she considered Young Goon to be a sheet of white paper and acted freely to create the character.

Jung Ji Hoon who plays the role of Il Soon said, "The Director, my partner Lim Soo Jung, and all the other staff were so great that it was a fun production."
